William Hughes was a Revolutionary Soldier, serving in the Continental Army of Virginia in 1777, and served throughout the War, rendering service as a soldier in Capt. Nathaniel Fox's Company, commanded by Lt. Col. Charles Simms.  His service took him through most of the major battles in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, including the Battle of the Guilford Court House.  He was present at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown.  William Hughes brought his wife Nancy, and their children to Rutherford County, now Cleveland County (formed in 1841), settling on Beaver Dam Creek, near Boiling Springs where they spent the rest of their lives.   William is buried in the Blanton-Hughes cemetery, his grave marked by a well-worn fieldstone inscribed "WH, AD 1833."  Nancy is probably buried beside him, although no stone has been found for her

6.  WILLIAM EDWARD3 HUGHES, SR. (PHILIP2, WILLIAM1) was born November 14, 1809 in Rutherford NC, now Cleveland Co. NC, and died February 25, 1856 in Walton Co. Ga..  He married MINERVA MOORE June 12, 1832 in Walton Co. Ga., daughter of WILLIAM MOORE and MERCY BOHANNON.  She was born May 13, 1817 in probably  Clarke Ga., and died February 20, 1894 in Walton Co. Ga.

Notes for WILLIAM EDWARD HUGHES:
This is scanned from my book, OUR SOUTHERN ANCESTORS, Thelma Faye Cain Prince, compiler, c1985, Baltimore.

William E. Hughes owned a corn mill in Walton County and was listed as a miller on the 1850 Walton County census.  His widow, Minerva, was listed on the 1860 census.  William, listed with 1 poll and 610 acres in Tanner's District, Walton Co., in 1852, was worth total estate of $3900, no slaves.  Tax Lists, Drawer 61, Box 50, Walton Co. Ga. Archives

From Rena Britt, Memory Tucker, Bush Hamilton and others, the family tradition was passed to the present and each one of them told the compiler about the way in which William Edward Hughes met his death.  He was killed while helping Richard Overstreet Tucker, his brother-in-law, set some dynamite in a copper mine on the Richard O. Tucker farm in Walton County.  An accidental explosion occurred before William was able to get out of the mine; however, Richard escaped in time.

An old white house was standing in 1979 just off Rt. 81 in Walton County.  This property was referred to in old deeds as the Wiley Reeves tract, and the road as Monroe-Gainesville Road.  This house, believed to have been the home of Minerva and William Edward Hughes, was seen by the compiler in 1979, but due to "No Trespassing" signs, the writer did not go into the yard.  According to family tradition, Minerva and William are buried in a family cemetery there with unmarked graves.

Family tradition says that one day Minerva was alone at home during the Civil War when a Yankee soldier broke in looking for some food.  Minerva was so afraid when she saw him, she caught him unaware and shot and killed him.  I am told the blood stains are still on the kitchen floor of the Hughes farmhouse.

Sources for this family were: abstracted records, guardianship records, censuses, tombstones, wills, estate records, marriage records, and family records.
