Generation No. 1

1.  JOHN WHITEHEAD was born Abt. 1735 in New Kent Co. Va. or Nansemond Co. Va. (DAR applicants), and died Bef. September 03, 1787 in Amherst Co. Va., date his estate was administered.   See Amherst Co. Va. Will Book 3:52.   He married SARAH BURCHER about 1755 in Virginia.

John Whitehead served  in the American Revolution  as a Private in the calvary, and was issued a bounty land warrant for 100 acres of land after his death.  The warrant was dated 14 July 1792 and issued to Robert Means, assignee.  This is the record I received .  The bounty land warrant and record of his service as a soldier in the cavalry of the Virginia Continental Line are available from the National Archives.  Also see the DAR records which are abstracted later in this compilation.

It is thought that John and Sarah came to Amherst County, Va. about 1760.  This information has come down through several lines of his family,  They came from Eastern Virginia.  Sources for the Whitehead Family:  Amherst County Marriages by William Sweeny;  Estate of John Whitehead (d. 1787); DAR records on John Whitehead; Revolutionary Bounty Land Warrant and service roster on John Whitehead, National Archives; The History of Pittsylvania County, Virginia, by Maud Carter Clement, 1929; The Whitehead Story, by Ruth Whitehead Charlian, 1949, 1981, details one of the branches from John Whitehead, Jr. through his son, John Cary Whitehead; Virginia Soldiers of 1776 by Louis Burgess, Volume one, page 17. The Deeds of Amherst County, Virginia, 1807-1827 and The Wills of Amherst County, 1761-1865, both by Rev. Bailey Fulton Davis.

Whitehead, J.P. took the details of the pension claim from Elizabeth in August 1843.  Other sources used in this compilation were: DEEDSOF AMHERST AND ALBEMARLE COUNTIES, VIRGINIA, COURTHOUSE MINIATURES, both by Bailey Fulton Davis; also marriage records and wills of Amherst County.  The following is a list of deeds in which you will find some members of this family: Deed Bk C:295, D:421-422;E:59; F:4,45,224,486; G:359; I:273, 377, K:501.   See my webpage at this site for information on theFrancis Wright Family of Amherst County, Virginia.  Moses was his grandson.
